There is something so tender, so full of wonder, about maternity sessions. Maybe it’s the hush before a baby arrives or the way a couple holds each other a little closer, knowing everything is about to change. Whatever it is, the excitement and emotion always, always come through.
Here’s the thing you won’t hear too often: your maternity session doesn’t have to be over-the-top or Pinterest-perfect to be meaningful or “worthy” of photos. In fact, the most touching sessions I’ve ever photographed were the ones that felt true to the people in them.
Let’s talk about how we can make your maternity shoot personal, meaningful, and honest — the kind of images your baby will look at one day and feel your love wrap around them.
How to Make Your Maternity Photos Feel Personal

A lot of expecting parents come to me excited but unsure. They’ve seen styled shoots and elaborate themes… but they want something that feels a little softer, a little more them. That’s exactly where we start: with what feels like you.
When I photograph maternity portraits — whether it’s down at the beach during golden hour or tucked beneath eucalyptus trees with just a quiet breeze — my goal is always the same. I want to create space where love can breathe. I want you to be able to exhale.
Because these moments are fleeting. The soft curve of your belly. The way your hands find each other. The hush of the world as you wait.
Tips for a Meaningful Maternity Session
1. Start With Sentimental Touches
One of my favorite ways to personalize any maternity session is to include something meaningful:

- A baby blanket that your mother made
- Your childhood stuffed animal
- An heirloom or piece of family jewelry
- Hand-knit booties or a onesie you picked out after that first heartbeat
- Ultrasound photo

These aren’t props. They’re pieces of your heart. They remind us that this story started long before today.
2. Dress With Intention

You don’t have to show up in a ballgown, but… you totally can if you want to. Some of my mamas glow when they go all out with a flowy gown and plenty of elegance, while others feel best barefoot in their favorite sundress or wrapped in something cozy and neutral.
You truly can’t go wrong if:
- You feel comfortable and beautiful in what you’re wearing
- You stay hydrated, nourished, and well-rested
- You dress in a way that reflects your soul — not just what’s trendy
If your partner wants to match your vibe with a suit or something dapper? Even better. A little visual harmony adds warmth to every frame.

3. Celebrate the Season You’re In
Every maternity session holds its own quiet rhythm. Some are reflective and still, others lighthearted and filled with laughter. Whether you want to read a letter to your baby, sway barefoot in the breeze, or simply hold hands and listen to the waves, we’ll create a space that feels like home.
You can include:
- Soft fabrics or colors inspired by your baby’s nursery or the season
- Nature elements like wildflowers, sunlight, or ocean air
- Intentional pauses that let you just feel, be, and breathe

4. Think Beyond Social Media
Yes, you might share these photos online. But that’s not why we take them.
We take them for the stories they will tell years from now. For the albums opened on rainy days. For the child who will one day look back and know they were held in love long before they arrived.
So if the pressure creeps in to make everything look perfect, let it go. These are your real moments. That’s where the magic lives.

Why Maternity Photography Matters
When I look back at the sessions I’ve done, the ones that stay with me aren’t the ones with the fanciest setups. They’re the ones where mom and dad walked hand-in-hand through golden light, whispering to each other about the baby they can’t wait to meet.
Because ultimately, this isn’t about documenting a checklist. It’s about preserving love in its rawest, most tender form.
Let yourself be seen. Let the moment hold you.
