The Moments That Stay With Me: Why “That One Photo” Means Everything

The Magic of Real Moments

Have you ever looked at a photo and instantly felt time stop?

Not just because it was pretty or well-lit, but because it captured something unspoken. A feeling. A sliver of laughter mid-air. The warmth of being truly seen.

That’s what I treasure most about being a family and couples photographer across Orange County. I don’t take pictures just for the sake of having them – I create memories you can feel.

And while I love every single session (truly!), there are moments that still make my heart flutter when I look back. Tiny sparks frozen in time that remind me exactly why I do what I do.

The Heart Behind the Camera

Here’s what you may not always realize: most clients show up a little nervous. It’s completely normal.

Whether it’s your first time in front of the camera or you’ve got wiggly toddlers in tow, those first few minutes can feel awkward. (Even I feel that way when I’m the one being photographed!)

But there’s this beautiful shift that happens.

My friend once said, “You can see the exact moment your clients warm up to you in your photos.” And now I see it every single time.

Suddenly, arms loosen. Laughter flows more freely. The connection takes over. That’s where the magic lives.

And while I always aim for beautiful composition and good light, those are the moments I treasure — the human ones that show real love and joy.

A Few Photos That Will Stay in My Heart

Keri + Eddie: From Poses to Playfulness

Keri and Eddie flew in from out of town for their beach engagement session on the coast of California. From the first minute, I could feel the love between them – so kind, so open-hearted.

By the end of the session, they trusted me so much that when I jokingly suggested Eddie jump on Keri’s back (she’s teeny-tiny, mind you), they just did it! We laughed so, so hard, and it turned out to be one of their favorite photos. That joy? Totally real.

Jessica + Her Kids: Sunset + Barefoot Freedom

There’s this photo of Jessica running down the beach with her little ones, barefoot and free. Her husband joined in. The light was golden. It felt like watching a dream unfold.

That wasn’t about perfect posing or fancy matching outfits. It was about letting go… playing, laughing, being fully present. I know they’ll remember that evening long after the kids have grown.

Sweet Davis: The Bribe That Worked Wonders

During another session with Jessica and her son Davis, he was pretty shy. We tried a lot of things, and for most of the hour, he held back.

But at the very end, with a little help from a snack (a time-tested move for toddlers), we captured the softest moment between him and his mama. That photo? It holds a tenderness that still gives me goosebumps.

Sometimes the best photos are the ones gently guided by love, a little trust, and maybe even a cookie or two.

How I Know We’ve Got the Shot

Here’s what I want every mama, every couple, every family I work with to know:

You don’t need to do anything “perfectly.”

  • You don’t need to know how to pose.
  • You don’t need to worry if your little one is fussy or wild.
  • You don’t need to stress about impressing me.

All you need to do is show up as you are. From there, I’ll guide you with care. I’ll make space for play. I’ll gently direct where it matters and back off when the moment takes over.

And then we wait for that shift – when you forget you’re being photographed. When you lean into each other. When your love and laughter take the lead.

That’s our moment. That’s your memory.

Why It Matters (Long After the Session Ends)

When you look back at your photos weeks, months, or even years from now, I want them to take you somewhere.

I want you to remember the way the ocean breeze felt, the way your son giggled when you chased him, the exact way your partner looked at you when they thought no one was watching.

Because that’s what these photos are for.

Nothing sets my soul on fire quite like knowing I’ve bottled up a memory your family will carry forever.
